Magnum Photo Magazine: Eli Reed
"The main thing for me is that I'm happy that I've been able to work as a professional photographer. What is at the core of my work is, in essence, a meditation on being a human being"
- Eli Reed
Of the many artists I looked at on Magnum Photos the one that stuck out to me the most was American Photographer and Magnum member Eli Reed. A documentary photographer, he travels the world capturing the raw essence of what it means to be human and the different cultural experiences we all go through. His work focuses on the human condition, particularly the lives of marginalized and underrepresented people. Through his lens, he has documented the struggles and triumphs of communities all around the world.
One of Eli Reed's most notable works is his book "Black in America," which features a collection of photographs that explore the experiences of Black Americans in the United States. Reed's images are raw and honest, depicting the challenges and injustices faced by Black Americans in their daily lives. From protests and political rallies to intimate family moments, Reed's photographs offer a powerful glimpse into the lives of those who have been historically oppressed and marginalized.

The image from the "Black in America" series depicts Lawyer John Crump in front of the Lincoln Memorial. The subject in the foreground is perfectly balanced while the background is off kilter, tilted giving the feeling of un ease and a level of tension the subject might be feeling in the moment. A feeling of not belonging a term often feeling felt by black people often when inhabiting white spaces. It shows that clearly, bringing to life what happens in the mind no matter your wealth or status.

| "Lost Boys" |
Eli Reed takes amazing images capturing the youthful spirit children tend to have. His framing of the image with the boy doing the splits in the foreground is welcoming the viewer into the rest of the image as you see other boys doing similar movements while other watch. This image from the Lost Boys series is capturing the joy and the movement of the Sudanese boys despite what they have gone through and were currently going through. The boys circled up together jumping around doing handstands and just full of life, an example of how kids just want to be kids and will always find a way to find the light in dark times.
