Hiroshi Sugimoto
Hiroshi Sugimoto is originally from Japan but currently lives in New York City and Tokyo, Japan—choosing to divide his time between both cities. A very interesting person, originally studying politics and sociology in 1970, he decided to go and get his degree in art in 1974, eventually receiving his BFA in Fine arts. Ultimately he settled down in New York City and started his art career of by working as a dealer of Japanese antiquities in SoHo, New York. Aside from being an accomplished artist and photographer, Sugimoto is also an accomplished artist—designing many things, from a Shinto shrine to a top-tier French restaurant in Japan called Stove. He truly is a talented individual.
Sugimoto is a very meticulous individual and photographer, often using an 8×10 large-format camera and extremely long exposures to do most of his work—often calling his style of photography time exposure experiments. He also is very detailed and anal about how his pictures turn out so he sets everything up precisely as he envisions it in his mind, creating beautiful images. My favorite from his many series of photos, are the ones where he incorporates architecture as a them in his photography. often photographing from the perspective of looking up from the ground level—when photographing huge scale architecture—to get that sense of seeing the building from the ground from.
Most of the work by Hiroshi Sugimoto I saw were very interesting and good, leaving me very satisfied. Even though there were some photographic series I did not enjoy, at the end of the day that doesn't take away from how much Hiroshi Sugimoto is such technically sound and amazing photographer, or how much thought and planning he puts into each series(often taking years to finish).Hiroshi Sugimoto took his love of photography and made it his life's work, which is truly inspirational.
