American art photographer Ralph Gibson is famously known for his photographic books. Ralph Gibson was born January 16, 1939 in Los Angeles, California. At the age of 17 Gibson enlisted in the U.S Navy and during that time started studying photography and even became a Photographers Mate until 1960. After that Gibson went on to continue studying photography at San Francisco then went on Art Institute until 1962. Gibson went on to becoming the assistant of Dorothea Lange (1961-1962), then went to go work on 2 films with Robert Frank, officially starting his photography career.

Gibson photographic books he is most known for, contain images that often incorporate fragments  with erotic and mysterious undertones, building the narrative meaning through contextualization and surreal juxtapositions. Ralph Gibson started of his photography career with surrealism as his mean influences, but as his career progressed he learned to adapt and change his influences to something more mature—becoming more interested in abstract sounds and music. For an example of Gibson becoming more interested in abstract sounds and music one can take a look at his Light Strings series and how it shows a unique perspectives of guitars—from loud color images to stark black and whites.

Many of Ralph Gibson's photo depict  the nude and unrefined human body in its most basic form or in jubilation. Letting us look into the act of what truly makes us humans. The saying "a pictures worth a thousand words" doesn't ring more true in the ears of many, until they look at Gibson's Many Photographs. You can tell that the subject of the picture isn't the mean concern for Gibson but rather it is the way he chooses them, frames them, and composes his image that makes his work unique.
